Site-Matched Plant Selection
LP selects trees, shrubs, and perennials based on each planting location's specific conditions: sun exposure, soil drainage, proximity to structures, root zone space, and the client's maintenance preferences. North Idaho's clay-loam soils and Zone 5b winters eliminate many common Pacific Northwest plant choices.
Proper Planting Depth & Backfill
The most common softscape failure in North Idaho is planting too deep. LP sets every tree and shrub at the correct crown flare depth, uses amended backfill appropriate to the plant type, and avoids the "mulch volcano" practices that kill young trees.
Deciduous Trees & Shade Canopy
LP installs shade trees — primarily cold-hardy deciduous species like Quaking Aspen, Thornless Honeylocust, Autumn Blaze Maple, and Princeton Elm — selected for North Idaho's extreme temperature swings and heavy snow loads.
Ornamental Shrubs & Foundation Planting
Foundation plantings that frame the home, define bed edges, and provide seasonal interest. LP favors long-lived shrubs: Ninebark, Serviceberry, Viburnum, Mock Orange, and native Currant for reliable performance across Kootenai County winters.
Perennial Beds & Seasonal Color
Perennial beds that return each year without replanting — Penstemon, Yarrow, Black-eyed Susan, Salvia, Catmint, and Echinacea are proven performers in North Idaho's climate. LP designs perennial beds for three-season interest and manageable maintenance.
Establishment Care & Watering Plan
New plantings require consistent moisture during their first growing season. LP provides written watering guidance for each plant type and can coordinate a drip irrigation setup for new beds to ensure establishment success even through North Idaho's dry August.
