Segmental Block Retaining Walls
A wall that holds is a wall
built with drainage first.
From the lakefront properties of Coeur d'Alene to the rolling prairies of Rathdrum, North Idaho's terrain presents unique challenges. A retaining wall isn't just about holding back dirt—it's about managing water, preventing erosion, and creating usable space.
Every wall LP builds starts with drainage engineering: perforated drain pipe at the base, washed drainage rock, and proper outlet routing. That's the foundation before a single block or boulder goes in. We've built walls across Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, and all of North Idaho since 2005. We know which shortcuts cause failures — and we don't take them.
What separates a 30-year wall
from a 5-year wall.
Built for Idaho Frost
North Idaho's freeze-thaw cycles generate enormous lateral pressure on walls. Every LP wall uses properly engineered drainage and setback ratios that prevent hydrostatic buildup — the primary driver of wall failure.
Geogrid Reinforcement Standard
Walls over 3 feet in height receive geogrid reinforcement layers tied back into compacted fill behind the wall face. This is not optional — it's standard LP practice for any wall that must perform for decades.
Permit-Ready Documentation
Kootenai County requires permits for walls over 4 feet in most residential zones. LP handles permit research, submittal, and inspection coordination. We've completed hundreds of permitted wall projects across the region.
Own Equipment
LP's excavator operators place every boulder and prepare every wall base. No rental equipment, no subcontracted operators. The precision of boulder placement requires experienced operators who understand how stone behaves — that's in-house at LP.
Real results from real Idaho families across our service area.
"LP's retaining wall transformed our steep backyard into usable space. The Allan Block wall looks beautiful and handles our heavy Idaho snowmelt perfectly. Five years later, it's still solid."— Mike T., Hayden
"We had a failing timber wall from the 80s. LP's Versa-Lok system with geogrid reinforcement is engineered properly for our Bonner County winters. Worth every penny for the peace of mind."— Sarah L., Sandpoint
"The multi-tier retaining system LP built created three levels of usable yard on our Spirit Lake slope. The drainage engineering prevents any water issues, even during spring runoff."— David R., Spirit Lake
"LP handled all the permitting and engineering for our 8-foot wall. The geogrid reinforcement and drainage system give us confidence it will last through decades of Idaho freeze-thaw."— Jennifer M., Rathdrum
Every system has a right application.
Allan Block Systems
Allan Block is the most widely specified segmental retaining wall product in North Idaho. Its hollow-core geometry and consistent batter angle make it ideal for walls up to 6 feet before geogrid is required, and engineering documentation is readily available for permitted projects in Kootenai County.
Versa-Lok Pinned Systems
Versa-Lok uses through-pinning rather than setback geometry, allowing for near-vertical wall faces and easier integration with cap blocks and corner units. Preferred for tighter footprint situations, higher walls with geogrid reinforcement, and projects where aesthetics call for a more uniform face.
Timber & Deadman Systems
Pressure-treated timber walls with horizontal deadman anchors for low-to-mid-height applications. Lower material cost than block systems, and particularly well-suited for garden terracing and informal landscape beds on gentler slopes.
Geogrid Reinforcement
Any block wall over 3 feet in height receives geogrid layers tied back into compacted fill behind the wall face at engineered intervals. This is LP standard practice, not an upsell — it's the difference between a wall that performs for 30 years and one that fails in 5 Idaho winters.
Integrated Drainage Engineering
Every LP block wall includes perforated drain pipe at the footing, washed drainage aggregate behind the face, and geotextile fabric separation. Drainage engineering is not optional on LP wall projects — it is included in every estimate and installed on every wall.
Slope Terracing & Multi-Tier Systems
Multi-tier block wall systems that convert steep, unusable hillside into level outdoor living terraces. LP handles the full scope: excavation, structural fill compaction, wall installation, and finish grading to create usable yard from raw slope.
