Natural Boulder Walls
No two boulders are alike.
No two walls should be either.
From the basalt cliffs of Spirit Lake to the granite outcroppings of Rathdrum, North Idaho is boulder country. When LP places a boulder wall, we're using the same material this region's geology has been assembling for millennia — placed by experienced operators who understand how to fit irregular stone together into a stable, long-term structure.
Boulder placement requires an excavator and a skilled operator — not a manual crew with a block cart. LP's operators have placed boulder walls on steep slopes, stream banks, and tiered hillsides across Post Falls, CDA, Hayden, and all of North Idaho since 2005. The equipment is ours. The experience is in-house.
The permanence and character
only natural stone can deliver.
Excavator-Placed Precision
LP's own excavator operators place every boulder. Precision boulder placement requires an experienced operator who reads how stone sits, how to tilt and rotate pieces for tight fits, and how to build a stable base course. This skill cannot be subcontracted — it lives with the operator. LP's crews have been placing boulders across Kootenai County since 2005.
No Two Walls Are Alike
Every boulder wall LP builds is unique. Irregular natural boulders can't be duplicated. The result is a wall that has the rugged authenticity of North Idaho's natural terrain — a character that manufactured block systems, however well-engineered, cannot replicate.
Naturally Integrates with Idaho Landscapes
Native basalt and granite boulders are geologically at home in North Idaho. Over time, lichens colonize the surface and plantings establish at the base — the wall becomes part of the landscape rather than sitting in it. The longer a boulder wall ages, the better it looks.
Cost-Effective at Large Scale
Boulder walls can be more economical than block systems at larger scales, particularly on rural or acreage properties where boulder material is locally available. LP evaluates boulder vs. block based on site conditions, available material, and the homeowner's aesthetic goals — and recommends the right system for the scope.
Real results from real Idaho families across our service area.
"LP's boulder wall transformed our steep Spirit Lake hillside into usable garden space. The natural basalt boulders look like they belong here, and the drainage system prevents any water issues. Ten years later, it's still perfect."— Robert K., Spirit Lake
"We wanted something that looked natural on our Rathdrum property. LP's boulder placement skill is incredible—they made our retaining wall look like it grew out of the hillside. No other company could match that."— Maria S., Rathdrum
"The stream bank stabilization LP did with boulders has held up through every spring flood. The natural rock integrates perfectly with our Bonner County landscape and looks better every year."— Tom W., Sandpoint
"LP sourced the boulders locally and placed them with such precision. Our garden terrace wall in Hayden looks authentic and functions perfectly. The cost was right too—much better than block systems."— Lisa P., Hayden
From structural slope retention
to naturalistic garden features.
Structural Slope Retention
Large boulders (300 lbs–5+ tons) placed by excavator create structural retaining walls for slopes, hillsides, and stream banks. Unlike block systems that rely on engineered geometry, boulder walls depend on mass, base excavation depth, and the operator's skill in fitting irregular shapes tightly together. LP's operators have placed hundreds of boulder walls across North Idaho.
Tiered Garden & Landscape Walls
Smaller boulder courses (100–500 lbs) used for garden terrace walls, planting bed borders, and landscape definition. Tiered boulder systems at lower heights create a naturalistic, permanent garden structure that integrates with plantings as groundcover and perennials establish around the rock over time.
Stream Bank Stabilization
Properties with seasonal or perennial streams, drainage channels, or irrigation ditches use boulder placement to armor the bank against erosion and undercutting. LP's excavation capability allows us to reshape and re-slope the bank before placing boulders for a stable, long-term solution.
Decorative Feature Boulders
Single specimen boulders or small groupings placed as landscape focal points, entry markers, or natural accent features. LP sources regionally appropriate basalt, granite, and quartzite boulders that match North Idaho's native geology — not imported decorative rock that looks out of place in the landscape.
Regionally Sourced Basalt & Granite
LP sources boulder material from North Idaho and Pacific Northwest quarries — basalt columns, granite fieldstone, and river-worn cobble. Regional stone is not only more economical (lower transport cost) but looks authentically at home in North Idaho's terrain. We don't import tropical stone into an Idaho landscape.
Drainage Integration
Every LP boulder wall includes drainage engineering behind and through the wall: drainage rock backfill and outlet routing to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup. This is especially critical on slopes with clay-heavy soils where water retention behind a wall causes settling and movement over time.
