North Idaho's freeze-thaw cycles require deeper base depths than warmer climates. For a residential gravel or paved driveway subject to typical passenger vehicle traffic, LP recommends a minimum 12–18 inches of properly compacted aggregate base on top of prepared sub-grade. For driveways used by heavier vehicles (RVs, delivery trucks, equipment), or in areas with poor sub-grade soils (high clay content), 18–24 inches is appropriate. LP provides a site-specific recommendation based on your soil conditions and anticipated traffic loads.

LP primarily sources 3/4-inch minus crushed basalt aggregate from quarries in and around Kootenai County. Crushed basalt is the appropriate material for North Idaho — the angular, fractured rock faces interlock under compaction and resist the lateral movement caused by freeze-thaw cycles. Round river gravel (pit run) is cheaper but does not interlock properly and tends to rut and migrate under traffic. LP uses pit run only as a lower sub-base layer when appropriate, with crushed aggregate on top.

Gravel driveway construction pricing depends on length, width, existing sub-grade conditions, and aggregate depth. A typical 200-foot residential driveway at 12 feet wide (2,400 sq ft) with 12 inches of compacted base in average soil conditions typically runs $8,000–$16,000 for excavation, aggregate supply, and compacted installation. Longer runs, deeper base requirements, and rocky or poor sub-grade conditions will increase cost. LP provides itemized per-square-foot estimates after a site review.

Yes. LP builds private access roads on rural North Idaho acreage regularly — for new home construction, agricultural access, timber management, and rural estate properties. We grade the road corridor, build proper drainage ditches, install culverts at natural drainage crossings, construct the base course with appropriate aggregate, and leave a finished road surface ready for gravel or future paving. Rural road projects in both Kootenai and Bonner Counties are part of LP's regular service area.

The ideal season for base construction is late spring through fall (May–October) when the ground has thawed completely and soil conditions allow proper compaction. Working in frozen or partially frozen soil prevents proper compaction and can trap frost that degrades the base over winter. Emergency repairs to failed bases can be done in other seasons, but new construction is best scheduled outside the freeze period. LP typically books base projects 2–4 weeks out during the busy summer season.
