Bed Edge Definition
Before any mulch is placed, LP defines or refreshes the planting bed edges. Clean, crisp edges between lawn and bed are the detail that separates a professionally finished landscape from a DIY one. LP uses a bed edger or spade to create a sharp, defined trench that holds mulch in place and prevents grass encroachment.
Weed Fabric Assessment
LP evaluates existing weed barriers and recommends repair or replacement where they're compromised. In beds without a barrier, LP can install commercial-grade landscape fabric before mulching — or advise against it where perennial root systems make fabric a problem rather than a solution.
Shredded Bark Mulch
LP's most-used product for ornamental beds. Shredded bark locks together after settling, resists blowing in North Idaho's spring winds, and decomposes slowly into the soil — improving organic matter content over time. Available in natural brown, cedar red, and dark (dyed) options.
Cedar and Hemlock Bark
Cedar and hemlock bark products offer natural insect resistance and a distinctive color. Cedar mulch is particularly popular for foundation plantings and beds near structures where moisture control and natural pest deterrence have added value.
River Rock and Decorative Stone as Mulch Alternative
For beds that drain poorly, sit near downspouts, or are planted with drought-tolerant species, LP can install river rock or crushed decorative stone as a mulch alternative. Stone mulch is permanent, weed-suppressing, and appropriate for xeriscaping applications.
Depth and Refresh Scheduling
Proper mulch depth (3 inches for most beds, 2 inches around tree bases — never against the trunk) is critical. Too thin and it doesn't suppress weeds; too deep and it smothers root zones. LP applies to correct depth and can schedule annual refresh visits to maintain effective coverage as mulch decompresses.
