Sod is pre-grown turf that's harvested and rolled out for an instant, usable lawn — it's the right choice when you need a finished surface quickly or when a polished look is the priority. Hydroseeding sprays a slurry of seed, water, mulch, and tackifier directly onto prepared soil — it's more economical and works well for large or irregular areas, slopes, and situations where a few weeks of establishment time is acceptable. In North Idaho, installed sod typically runs $1.25–$2.00 per square foot; hydroseeding runs $0.35–$0.65 per square foot. Spring (May through June) and early fall (late August through September) are the ideal installation windows in Post Falls, CDA, and across Kootenai County. Cooler soil temperatures and more consistent moisture during these periods give new grass — whether sod or hydroseeded — the best conditions for rooting and establishment. Summer heat makes establishment harder because new turf requires very frequent irrigation to avoid drying out during the critical first weeks. LP can install sod nearly year-round as long as the ground isn't frozen, but we always recommend avoiding peak summer installations when possible.

Hydroseeding in North Idaho typically runs $0.30–$0.65 per square foot depending on the seed mix specified, slope difficulty, and site access. A standard 5,000 square foot lawn application usually falls in the $1,500–$3,250 range for the hydroseeding alone. Soil preparation — tilling, grading, and any needed amendment — is typically priced separately and depends on the condition of the existing soil. Under ideal conditions — soil temperatures above 50°F and consistent moisture — hydroseeded grass typically germinates within 7–21 days. Your first mow should wait until the grass reaches 3–4 inches, which usually happens 4–6 weeks after germination. Full lawn establishment — where the turf is dense, rooted deeply, and ready for normal use — takes 4–8 weeks from germination. Yes. LP regularly hydroseeds slopes, graded banks, and post-excavation revegetation areas across Kootenai County. For steeper grades, LP uses tackifier-heavy slurry mixes that anchor the seed and mulch to the slope surface during germination. On very steep slopes or areas with significant erosion risk, LP can also install erosion control blankets in combination with hydroseeding to stabilize the slope until root systems establish.
